Inclusive Design is the design of mainstream products or services that are accessible and usable by as many people as reasonably possible without the need for specialized design.
When we focus solely on the needs of a specific set of users we exclude other potential users by design. When we meet the needs of a wider audience we are able to create an inclusive design.
The fundamental principles behind Inclusive Design are that designs need to be user centered, population aware, and business focused. By focusing on user centered design we are able to meet the needs of different types of users. By being population aware, we can identify many more groups of users not just people who are fully able or disabled as we are prone to doing currently. Finally by being business focused we can implement the inclusive design principles at every stage of the project. This will ultimately lead to less frustrations by users and less customer support issues.
By implementing an inclusive design philosophy in our projects we widen our customer base, reduce frustration by the customers, improve the business image and ultimately create design that is usable, desirable and profitable.
