Either we are smart or we aren’t. That was the popular belief until research showed that our brain acts like a muscle, the more we use it the smarter and stronger it gets.
There are two types of mindsets, fixed and growth. These mindsets were discovered by Carol Deck, a Stanford University psychologist. Her research on achievement and success helped pave the way for our current understanding of how we can grow and improve our minds.
We believe that we possess certain abilities and qualities. Intelligence, personality, and talent to just to name a few. From the time we are born the external feedback we receive affect our mindsets. Can these traits be improved or are we stuck with what we have?
People with fixed mindsets believe that they just can’t change their lot in life so why even try. On the other had people with a growth mindset believe that their hard work and dedication will payoff and help them grow. They are not satisfied with a status quo and want to do their best to improve themselves.
The importance of having a growth mindset is extremely valuable for all stages in life. For kids in school it sets them up for success in college and in life. For adults it helps them continually grow and expand their knowledge.
Even though it may be hard to make the switch from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset, the good news is that it’s never too late to. We are all destined to do achieve greatness in our lives. Now we just have to go out there and do it!
